A grand, sculptural specimen tree with branches to the ground, the European beech has extremely muscular, smooth gray bark, exposed roots, and glossy leaves. ¨Red Obelisk¨ retains a columnar outline, even with age, and its variously cut dark purple leaves fade to greenish maroon by late summer.
