A grand, sculptural specimen tree with branches to the ground, the European beech has extremely muscular, smooth gray bark, exposed roots, and glossy leaves. ¨Red Obelisk¨ retains a columnar outline, even with age, and its variously cut dark purple leaves fade to greenish maroon by late summer. Wrap the trunk in the winter and plant in location protected from harsh dry winds.
